Washington Nationals Can't Pitch, Hit, Pay Rent

Some serious financial controversy is brewing in Washington D.C., and, for once, it doesn't involve Blackwater. The worst-run organization in D.C. this side of the White House seems to have bigger problems than its 35-58 record and nonexistent pitching staff.

According to the Washington Post, Nationals management owes the city $3.5 million in overdue rent. The team's refusal to pay up stems from a dispute over the state of the new stadium that was built by the city. The Lerner family, who owns the Washington Nationals, claim that the park is not finished, while the city feels it's entitled to the rent because Nationals Park has been in full use since March.

Lerner cites the lack of LED lights around the scoreboard as good reason to withhold payments. Meanwhile, the franchise takes all the profit from food, drink, and merchandise sales within the publicly funded stadium. Sounds to me like a cheap owner trying to wiggle his way out of any expenses he can, and we wonder why the Nationals haven't improved since moving to D.C.
