The Happy Recap: Rickie Weeks Would Not Like To Be Forgotten
Brewers 6, Cardinals 3: Milwaukee began to make the outside pass on the Cards with last night's win, pulling into second place in the Central thanks to Bill Hall's 10th inning home run. Tied 3-3 after Skip Schumaker's sac fly in the ninth, the Brewers took advantage of a shaky bullpen to record their fifth straight victory. Along with Hall, second baseman Rickie Weeks went 2-5 with a homer, making that whole Ray Durham acquisition look a bit silly. No worries, he'll likely resume draft bust status within the week. And hey, an Eric Gagne sighting!
Rays 4, A's 0: Shoulda-been-Met Scott Kazmir returned to early season form, allowing just two hits over seven innings. It was his eigth win overall, but only the second in his last eight starts dating back to early June. Tampa Bay maintained their 1 1/2 game lead over the Red Sox, moving to 18 games over .500. All the offense the Rays would need was provided by Evan Longoria, who homered for the third straight game.
DBacks 2, Cubs 0: Chicago can't deal with the all-business, all-party nature of the Mullet, who beat them again to improve to 13-0 in 14 starts vs. the Cubs. Rich Harden had a no-hitter going into the sixth, but his lack of an imaginative hair cut was his obvious downfall. That and Alex Romero's first career home run. Arizona improved to 49-50, keeping them in a tie for first (!?) with the Dodgers and the Malibu Little League Traveling Team.
Indians 5, Angels 2: The Indians remind me of the late-90s Mariners, who got better with each star they got rid of. Taking on the best team in the Majors, Cleveland won its third straight thanks to a trio of long balls from Andy Marte, Casey Blake, and Jhonny Peralta. Already missing their 3-4 hitters and without CC Sabathia, the team can climb out of the AL Central cellar with another win coupled with a Kansas City loss. Who knows, get rid of Grady Sizemore and they could soon be challenging for the division. Or just completely suck. On second thought, yeah, that's more likely. But only ten games under .500! Almost makes you forget they have to play in Ohio.
